Casa Vicens

Our food tour ended at the first house Gaudí built as a freshly minted architect, Casa Vicens. This 1883 building opened to the public for the first time in 2019. Because it’s not well-known, tickets are inexpensive and lines are nonexistent. Here one sees the beginnings of Gaudí’s Arabic or Moorish style, a break from 19th century architecture. There is a Turkish smoking room for guys and a grilled porch for the ladies who wish to see without being seen. Gaudí added other porches and terraces, several with water features, to bring the outside into the house. Casa Vicens was built in what was then country. Gaudí was pained that so many wild flowers died on the spot where the house was erected and so created ceramic flowers to garnish the house and remind us of the flora sacrificed for shelter.
